MedStar Washington Hospital Center is the largest private hospital in the nation’s capital. The 47-acre, 926-bed facility is one of the top 50 teaching and research hospitals in the nation, and is staffed by some of the region’s most experienced medical and surgical professionals. In order to improve patient satisfaction ratings, Washington Hospital leadership tasked CTSI with implementing patient-focused technological improvements throughout the facilities.
Challenge
While Washington Hospital Center’s quality of medical care is advanced, the facility’s communications equipment was generations behind. CTSI engineers and technicians needed to develop integrated solutions that could incorporate IT, Telecom, wireless technologies and staff locating systems. The total solution needed to be functional but also scalable to anticipate future needs.
Solution
CTSI’s expert team implemented an advanced, server-based Responder 5 system throughout the facility. The Responder 5 software platform integrated seamlessly throughout the hospital’s existing network infrastructure and wireless telephone system. In addition to the Responder 5 system, CTSI technicians installed a Real Time Locating system to provide advanced staff tracking. The system empowers health care providers to respond more rapidly. It enables real-time tracking of staff so that they can be reached more quickly, and more accurately monitors the time that caregivers spend with individual patients. The Responder 5 and Real Time Locating systems provide specialized reporting to support Rounding and other HCHAPS initiatives.
Results
Ultimately, CTSI developed and implemented a solution that effectively modernized Washington Hospital Center’s patient care technologies. The Responder 5 system, when integrated through the wireless phones, enables health care providers to understand patient needs before visiting the room. This saves time, and improves the patient care experience. The Real Time Locating software improves response time and allows providers to reevaluate and modify rotations to better meet patient needs. After several months of deployment, CTSI’s solution was instrumental in improving Washington Hospital Center’s patient satisfaction ratings across the board.
